Last year was the year of the Maxus sets which filled up the stockings of Bakugan Collectors and Brawlers. This year is the year of the Colossus. So move over Maxus Dragonoid (and Helios!). We have a new
big bad mean machine that is sure to be on a lot of kid's Christmas list.
We decided to cover this topic first as we think that Spin Master is going all out with new Exclusive sets. The Dharak Colossus set really looking more of a "must-buy" toy as compared to the Maxus sets from 2009.
While a lot of players and collectors will probably don't care, this is a huge thing for toys manufacturers. Competition for the most in-demand toys for the christmas season gets really intense. While most
of us will be doing just the unwrapping, most parents will be doing the shopping which can get really crazy during the shopping season. Toy manufacturers do their best to grab mom or dad's attention and make
sure one item is checked off the toy list. Read on and let's get you drooling.
The packaging is more than two times thicker than the previous Maxus sets. The actual Dharak Colossus is much bigger and requires the additional space. The pictures on the flap cover which is the very front
of box could be a mystery to some but the big "Dharak Colossus" is something that you cannot miss. Open the flap cover and you will see the actual Dharak Colossus with Dharak (actual Bakugan) on the bottom
left of the packaging. Inside are some labels too which will help you quickly identify the different Bakugan and Battle Gear that you are getting with this set. The back side of the flap cover also has
a nice picture of Dharak Colossus which gives another reasons for collectors to keep this bad boy in the box.
The top part of the box also has a clear window to see Colossus from the top. Although this was a cool idea, it seems the view from the top is not as pretty from the front. The back of the box features another
picture of the colossus and this time with simulated arm and light action(oh yes it lights up!). It also has some info on the different Bakugan and Battle gear plus a cool photo of Dragonoid Colossus (we want this
one too!). You'll also get the standard Bakugan Dimension game information but does not say on this part of the packaging if all of the parts will have their own DNA code. Although it has a DNA code label in the inside,
it would have been nice to know that all of them will get a DNA code.
Over all the packaging is very cool and for sure it will grab your attention. You'll probably buy 2 if you are a serious Bakugan collector as one definitely must stay in the box. You also might need more wrapping paper
for this exclusive set but the smile you'll get (and maybe a big woohooo!) will be worth it.
Dharak Colossus is big and mean scorpion looking Bakugan. You can almost forget that this toy is actually something you can play in a real Bakugan game.
You can probably put this toy beside any transformer toy and it'll blend in. The detailing on this
colossus is pretty cool but the color scheme was a bit disappointing. It could be because of the poor sheen of the silver paint and the charcoal black or dark grey appearance
of the base plastic which makes it look like cheaply manufactured toy. I think the original chrome paint on a Phosphos Bakugan would make this Bakugan shine! Looking past the color scheme and you'll notice nice detailing all around. Some additional paint markings
could have helped this set look better but it does have a good number of painted parts. The Green and yellow paint markings which belong to Darkus bakugan,
are very few which should be more visible than the silver painted parts.
Dharak Colossus features some cool movable parts like the "mini" claws on the side of the head and that huge tail which is movable but somewhat restricted. Connect the 2 gears, make them into the claws
and you can also move them up and down which another cool thing about this new set. The 2 Battle gears,
Smashtor and Riptor has a cool design too and looks awesome attached or unattached. Again the silver paint markings were a bit of a turn off but the overall appearance of each
gear even in closed form is pretty amazing.
Dharak Colossus (main body piece) which is the transformation hub and the biggest piece of this exclusive set, is sadly not playable with the Bakugan game. It does have the Darkus Attribute symbol but we were
disappointed to not find any G-power value. We all know about the upcoming "vehicle" gear like Impalaton which features the same connection base that we see on the top of the head and this lead us to believe
the Colossus piece was a vehicle gear. Making Dharak Colossus a vehicle gear would have made this an awesome set and have more value to a Bakugan player (and make it really
worth our $40).
The Battle Gear Riptor and Smashtor which becomes the left and right claw of this Bakugan was a cool idea. Both Battle Gear come with their own Battle Gear Reference card which makes them "playable" as
compared to the Maxus Dragonoid Traps pieces which never got their own individual trap cards. The Battle Gear are very unique looking and the G-Powers are not too bad. Smashtor has 80 G and Riptor has 100 G
which are on the high end of the Battle Gear G-Power value. Another cool surprise are the connector slots or holes for each Battle Gear
which are the same size and dimensions for any Battle Gear. We mounted the two gears on Dharak and they make a really slick, mean and weird looking Combo. Some Bakugan (Strikeflier) don't mount properly with these two gears
and you might have to flip the Gear around but kudos to Spin Master for not leaving this detail out as more kids can "play" more with their Bakugan.
The Dharak Bakugan was a big disappointment. 750 G?! We know of the 790 G versions which came out from Season 3 wave 1 and we are really stumped why it was not the version included with this set. 750 G
is starting to become the median G-Power value with the wave 3 releases and having a high G Dharak (790 or more!) could have given a Bakugan Player more reason to buy this set.
If you are wondering about what makes this set "electronic" then look underneath Riptor and inside Smashtor's mouth (claw). You'll find the light up parts that we see with most light-up Bakugan.
The lights are well positioned to compliment to fully assembled Colossus which is another plus with this set. All this detail is well thought of and again we give kudos to Spin Master for the attention
to detail.
The closed form of all the pieces are not bad. The Dharak Colossus piece looks like a vehicle because of the "wheel-like" parts on either side which
also have the connector studs for Riptor and Smashtor. The Battle Gears are pretty unique with their design too and have a more advanced look compared to
the current Battle Gear releases.
The retired Maxus sets had terrible cards that were included with each set and the peices were also useless for the Bakugan game as they got quickly overpowered
by the number of new traps (with more attributes) and stronger bakugan (B3 Series) that got released with them. This is not the case with this Dharak Colossus set and hopefully
the same can be said Dragonoid Colossus set. The Reference cards provided for Riptor and Smashtor means you can actually use them in a Bakugan battle. They also have some cool abilities
which Im sure some of us might find very useful and can come up with some cool combos. We are really happy that this set is not just for show and might even be included with some
of our Bakugan teams.
Place Dharak Colossus with any Maxus set and you'll see how far advanced Bakugan design has evolved. It's not just about the size but the concept of the combining Bakugan has been
taken to a whole new level. The Helios set had an awkward look because they were based on the appearance of the Bakugan form of each marble and Maxus Drago had a very weird
disproportional look because of the having the main piece as a normal Bakugan attached to big clunky Trap pieces. With the Colossus set, Spin Master found a good formula
in creating an awesome Bakugan set. We still yet to get our hands on the Dragonoid Colossus set which seems to be more promising but just seeing the advancement in the
toy design is a good reason to stay hooked and addicted to this collectible toy game.
- New Concept
- Unique Battle Gear
- Electronic
- Reference cards provided with included Gear
- New packaging
- DNA Code available with all pieces.
- Dharak is only 750 G
- Silver paint has dull sheen
- Dharak Colossus (Main piece) is not playable with Bakugan Game
Our wallet felt $40 lighter today and we think most Bakugan players and collectors will feel the same way too. Dharak colossus is an awesome Bakugan set.
If you have the Maxus sets then you'll be happy to have the new Colossus sets as part of your collection. These new sets are not just for show too
as the 2 new unique Battle Gears Smashtor and Riptor, are somewhat playable and could be squeezed in with any team as we now have a 2 Trap/Battle Gear limit.
Notice: We will not be selling these sets as we feel getting them as an unopened boxed set (that comes with pricey shipping cost) is the only way to get your money's worth.
